The FMX Equipment neck brace sits between your helmet and your shoulders to limit sudden head movement in a crash and spread the load across your shoulders and back instead of concentrating it in your neck. It rests on the chest and back, settles into place over your torso, and comes off quickly at the end of a ride. It is standard kit in enduro, motocross and trail riding, where going down is part of the deal, and plenty of street riders wear one simply because they would rather be covered. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, then store it dry with nothing stacked on top.
