And if one bike sums up its spirit, it’s the XR600R: few motorcycles earned the title “indestructible” as honestly. Built from 1985 to 2000, this air-cooled, single-cylinder four-stroke big-bore became synonymous with brutal reliability, Baja 1000 victories, and true go-anywhere capability. We use its story as an emblem, but at FMX Covers we work with the entire XR family, in every displacement.

The birth of a legend

The XR600R debuted in 1985 as the logical evolution of the XR500R, which had already won the Baja 1000 in 1982 and 1984. Honda wanted more displacement for more torque in long-distance racing, but without the complexity of liquid cooling. The result was a 591cc engine with an RFVC (Radial Four Valve Combustion) four-valve head, dry-sump lubrication, and a mechanical simplicity that would make it eternal.

The big 1988 revision

The most important change came in 1988. Honda replaced the original dual progressive carburetors with a single larger one, completely redesigned the chassis, added a rear disc brake, and shed nearly 20 lbs. That configuration —591cc engine producing about 47 hp at 6,000 rpm, kick-start only, five-speed— stayed practically untouched until the end of production. The XR600R dethroned the two-stroke Kawasaki KX500 as the king of Baja.

Why it’s still a cult bike

Today, at 25 to 40 years old, XR600Rs are still running. Their reputation rests on three pillars: an engine that takes whatever you throw at it as long as you change the oil, simple mechanics with no radiators or fragile electronics, and low-end torque that will climb anything. It’s not the lightest bike or the easiest cold-starter, but it’s one of the few you can leave for 20 years and bring back to life. In 2000 it was replaced by the liquid-cooled XR650R, but for purists, the 600 remains the last of the truly indestructible.

From the XR80 to the XR650: the whole Japanese family

The XR600R is the most iconic, but the Japanese XR family is huge and every displacement has its following. The XR80 and XR100 were the gateway for entire generations. The XR200, the faithful trail companion. The XR250, perhaps the most beloved and best-selling XR in the world, unbeatable in reliability. The XR400, the sweet spot between weight and power. And at the top, the big ones: the XR600 and its siblings the XR650L (the street-legal one, an icon in the United States) and the XR650R (the liquid-cooled queen of Baja). At FMX Covers we work with every Japanese XR, every displacement: if you own an XR, we have your seat cover, your tank cover, and your custom OEM-style combo.

The restoration: the detail that makes the difference

Restoring an XR600R is a ritual.
